JAZZ FEST 1999
FRIDAY NIGHT- APRIL 24

Friday night happy hours are traditional PDKK gathering times during the Fest. After a satisfying first day at the Fairgrounds, Joe and I stroll out the back gate and head to Liuzza's for the street party with the Kat gathering. We have drinks and smokes and hugs and kisses galore. If you've been to Liuzza's during Fest, you know what the scene was like. We buy PDKK shirts from Pony and I drool over the gorgeous sarongs by Julie. But mostly we greet old and new friends and share the excitement about being at Fest at last!

We feel so lucky to be staying intown, as we make the quick stroll down Rampart just a few blocks to catch the Wild Magnolias at The Funky Butt for $12 apiece. This was a night to remember - as most of our Funky Butt nights seem to be. The club is packed, but most of the sweaty bodies pressing against me are fellow Kats, so I don't mind (GRIN). As always, the band that backs up this Mardis Gras Indian act blows the crowd away. They are an amazing trio - total wild men on drums, guitar and bass. They have a young phenom sitting in on keys and they funk us up good. When the Indians finally come out in full regalia, dancing and chanting in the sweaty heat, we are all ecstatic. What a joy, to be surrounded by such Kat bliss. This night is a real highlight for us! Joe and I walk back to our hotel, deciding to pass up on a trip to Donna's. It is already 2 am and we are trashed and tired and ready to hit the sack after a perfect day. Besides, we're already thinking ahead to walking in the Fest gates bright and early Saturday morning.
